Industry Outlook

Key factors influencing the growth of a country or region’s baby diaper and wet wipe market include the number of children of appropriate age and per capita GDP levels. According to standards set by the North American Nonwovens Association (INDA), a per capita GDP of at least $3,500 provides the economic foundation for households to start using baby diapers, while a per capita GDP of $23,500 is required for the baby diaper market to achieve 100% penetration. Meanwhile, UNICEF defines the economic threshold for initiating wet wipe usage as a per capita GDP of $8,000.

As shown in Figure 1, by 2023, developed regions such as North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand will have per capita GDP levels that exceed the threshold needed for baby diaper market penetration to reach 100%. However, these regions are expected to experience limited population growth, which will somewhat constrain market expansion. In contrast, the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East, and Latin America will see per capita GDP surpass the baseline required for consumption of baby diapers and wet wipes. At the same time, these regions are characterized by rapid population growth, presenting significant potential for future development.

From 2018 to 2023, global sales of baby diapers are expected to grow by 36%, reaching over $70 billion. Among these, the Asian market will account for the highest sales volume. Meanwhile, Africa and South America boast relatively high population growth rates and a large proportion of young people, making their baby diaper markets poised for rapid expansion.

From 2018 to 2023, global sales of baby diapers are expected to grow by 23%, reaching a total of over 220 billion units. The Asia-Pacific region will drive this global growth, while the African market is also anticipated to experience strong expansion, fueled by economic development and population increases. Meanwhile, in developed countries and regions, declining birth rates are projected to keep baby diaper sales at a relatively stable level.

From 2018 to 2023, global sales of baby wipes are expected to grow by around 19%, reaching a total of over 200 billion units. Unlike the baby diaper market, the growth in baby wipe sales is being seen across all regions worldwide. Among them, the Asia-Pacific region is leading the way with the fastest growth rate—up by 45%—while Latin America is also showing strong performance. Meanwhile, Africa, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand will experience double-digit growth, though these regions currently have relatively smaller sales volumes.

Product Information Sources and Purchase Channels
Today, consumers have a wide variety of sources for obtaining product information. Among these, word-of-mouth recommendations—from family members, friends, colleagues, and even healthcare professionals—are the most influential source of information. While some traditional channels, such as retail marketing and brand advertising, have declined in overall popularity compared to the past, they still remain effective in certain regional markets. In the U.S., conventional retail marketing tactics like coupons, flyers, and in-store ads continue to be widely used; meanwhile, in India, TV, radio, and online advertisements remain crucial sources of consumer information.

Figure 6 illustrates the frequency and influence of various information sources when purchasing baby diapers and wet wipes. As shown, family and friends remain the most common sources of information—and they wield significant influence. Meanwhile, online platforms such as parenting groups and social media are steadily gaining traction. Nearly 60% of parents surveyed are members of online parenting communities, which have become a key go-to source for product-related insights.

Where are consumers now buying baby diapers and wet wipes? Currently, no single channel dominates the market, and purchasing habits vary significantly across different regional markets. For instance, supermarkets and grocery stores hold a substantial share in Brazil and the UK, while pharmacies are the go-to shopping option in Mexico and North America. Meanwhile, specialty baby goods stores have gained considerable popularity in China.

Figure 8 reveals that, from 2013 to 2018, the share of online sales channels for baby diapers and wet wipes grew rapidly—particularly in countries like China and India, where adoption rates have already reached remarkably high levels. Subscription services, a personalized form of online shopping that has emerged in recent years, are gaining traction. Among surveyed parents, 36% have already tried subscription services, with Chinese parents leading the way at an impressive 68% adoption rate. Consumers turn to subscription services for greater convenience in accessing higher-quality products, and those who use these services are typically willing to pay a premium for top-tier offerings.

Consumer Usage and Demand Analysis
Figure 9 highlights the most popular baby diaper and wet wipe brands across different countries and regions. In the baby diaper market, Pampers and Huggies are the most widely used brands, collectively capturing 42% of the global market share. However, parents also frequently turn to region-specific brands—such as Kao, which is favored by Chinese consumers, and Mamia, a top choice in the UK. The baby wet wipe market shows a similar pattern, with Pampers, Huggies, and Johnson’s Baby remaining globally beloved brands. At the same time, regional and national brands continue to hold significant market shares, like Kleen Bebe wipes from Mexico.

Product performance and comfort are the most important factors driving the purchase of baby diapers. Features like leak prevention, absorbency, comfort, and keeping skin dry are top priorities for consumers when making a buying decision. Of course, consumer purchasing motivations vary slightly across different regions—for instance, European consumers place great emphasis on natural and eco-friendly products. Meanwhile, the primary reasons consumers switch diaper brands often revolve around product pricing and functionality.

Consumers in different regions are driven by slightly varying factors when purchasing baby wipes, though some remain relatively important across the board—such as maintaining moisture, being hypoallergenic, soft and comfortable, delivering excellent cleaning performance, and being free from alcohol and dyes, as well as durable and tear-resistant. Additionally, packaging features like ease of opening and closing, effective moisture retention, and the ability to dispense one wipe at a time significantly influence consumer satisfaction—and these same factors also play a key role in why consumers switch brands.

Cotton fibers are gaining popularity.

Parents everywhere want to provide their children with the best products, and cotton fibers deliver superior quality for baby diapers and wipes—features like comfort, low allergenicity, and excellent absorbency, all of which are highly valued by parents. Market research reveals that 82% of consumers consider cotton fiber to be the preferred material for baby products, including clothing and diapers. Globally, three-quarters of consumers expect baby care items to contain cotton fibers, with Chinese consumers leading the way at 89%, followed closely by Latin American consumers at 86%.

In addition to delivering excellent product quality, cotton fibers' sustainability advantages have also won over consumers.
